Dr. Pedro R. Moreno is currently a Professor in Cardiology and Director of Quality Services at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. Dr. Moreno is also Director for Academic Promotions in Cardiology for the Mount Sinai Hospital.

Trained at Harvard Medical School (Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital), Dr. Moreno is a world-renowned expert in atherosclerosis, Dr. Moreno is a pioneer in the understanding of inflammation and acute coronary syndromes. Dr. Moreno described for the first time the role of macrophages in ACS. Dr. Moreno identified the correlation between macrophages and tissue factor, a membrane-bound protein responsible for the activation of coagulation in vivo. His work in restenosis established the link between inflammation and smooth muscle cell proliferation in-vivo, allowing for the development of DES. His work using near-infrared spectroscopy is as a major advance in the elusive field of percutaneous coronary plaque characterization. Experimentally, Dr. Moreno was the first in evaluating DES as a potential treatment for vulnerable plaques.

Dr. Moreno is section editor of JACC, and Circulation Cardiovascular Interventions and the AHA annual scientific sessions organizing committee. Finally, Dr. Moreno is an excellent teacher and a mentor at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.
